Nowan’s Osaka Sundown EP was released on Screwloose this month.
G caught up with him to have a little chat about all things Nowan…
Please could you give us a little bit of information about yourself and your music? How did you first get into producing music?
It all started when I first heard Kromestar & Walsh - Panikroom and fell in love with the sounds of Dubstep, this was back in 2006. Before getting into Dubstep I was a hardcore Darkstep fan and I guess there are parallels to the two genres. It wasn’t until 2009 I first decided I wanted to make my own music. I had my friend teach me the basics of FLstudio and it was on. Working with friends who also produced helped me to evolve my sound and techniques but I found my own sound just sitting and trying over and over.
So, when you sit down to produce, do you have an idea what a track will be like before you start producing, or you just improvise?
When I sit down to produce I usually have a rough concept or a story in mind which I try to translate into sounds. The rest is improvised. I make my music based on feelings and experiences in my life.
And what do you think typifies a typical Nowan track?
A typical Nowan track is hard to describe since I always try to evolve my sound and move forward. At the moment I would describe a Nowan track as atmospheric, glitchy and subdeep.
There’s 8 tracks on your new EP, including remixes, but which track do you like most, and why?
My favourite track on the EP is Osaka Sundown because I had so much fun making it, the melody just came together first recording and the fact that Culprate did an amazing remix just makes it so much sweeter.
If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?
That is a really hard question since there are so many talented producers out there. I would love to sit down with Culprate in the studio together, that would be amazing!
Finally, what would be the ultimate achievement for you, in regards to your music?
The ultimate achievement for me would be to be able to make a living of my music, travelling the world and meeting new people.
